Current State of Cannabis: Yukon Cannabis Laws

Posted by BK on 5th Jan 2018

The Government of Yukon recently completed a public survey, which gathered constituents’ opinions on how Yukon’s cannabis laws should be implemented when the federal Cannabis Act goes into effect. According to Yukon’s proposed framework for legalized cannabis, Yukon is taking a cautious approach that provides for:

“…legal, controlled access to cannabis that displaces illegal and criminal activity. It will prioritize public health, safety and harm reduction, with a focus on protecting youth from negative health effects.”

Taking the public’s comments into account, the Government of Yukon’s proposed approach would:

•Set the minimum age to 19, which aligns with the minimum age for alcohol.

•Limit consumption to private residences and adjoining property — but only where “allowed by the owner.” Thus, landlords will be allowed to prohibit cannabis consumption on their properties.

•Give the Government of Yukon the sole authority to import, store, transport, and distribute recreational cannabis in Yukon. The Government has stated that it needs additional time to develop a licensing system for retail stores.

Cannabis Labeling in Yukon

All recreational cannabis products in Yukon must comply with the federal Cannabis Act’s cannabis labeling laws.
