Nova Scotia, in response to the federal cannabis legislation in Canada, has been gathering public feedback and watching other provinces to make its own decision on how to approach legal cannabis once the law comes into effect in July 2018.
Among Nova Scotia’s goals for creating a regulated market for recreational marijuana are:
•Preventing children from obtaining cannabis
•Keeping drivers from driving while impaired
•Stopping organized crime from profiting from the marijuana trade
Nova Scotia’s cannabis policy is still a work in progress. Recent announcements have provided some clarity on the province’s approach. For starters, Nova Scotia has aligned the minimum age for cannabis use to its minimum age for using alcohol, which is 19. A crown corporation, the Nova Scotia Liquor Corporation, will be solely responsible for the sale and distribution of recreational cannabis in Nova Scotia. Cultivation and possession both align with the federal Cannabis Act.

The Cannabis Act details specific cannabis labeling and packaging requirements. Suppliers across Canada, including in Nova Scotia, will need to comply with all cannabis labeling requirements.
